Tahanan ng Pagmamahal: First Philec/FPMTC Putting a Little Love Away

The month of March officially signals the summer season and on that particular day of the sunny month, employees of First Philec/FPMTC were welcomed by sunnier smiles and warmed not by the weather but by the tight hugs and kisses of the children of Tahanan ng Pagmamahal.

Tahanan ng Pagmamahal is an orphanage located in the community of Pasig, in Barangay Oranbo.  With 15 children (ages 1 – 10 years old) and 3 housemothers, the old but well-maintained two-storey rented house is a haven for abandoned children and those rescued from the streets. Established a little less than two years ago by a Foundation headed by Mr. Reylindo E. Ortega, the orphanage just recently moved to their new Pasig location before spending more than a year in the Ortega household.  With no permanent major donors or sponsors, Tahanan ng Pagmamahal gets by through the kind help of individual and company sponsors who are contacted and invited to share by “Tito Rey”.

Armed with toys, books, toiletries, milk, biscuits and a Jollibee take-out lunch treat for the children (all these were donated by the employees), the First Philec/FPMTC volunteers headed to the orphanage on March 12, 2008. The children were expecting the employees and the next three hours were happily spent playing, reading books, teaching songs and sharing stories. The atmosphere of warmth and love was a far cry from what the children used to experience, as shared by DSWD Social Worker Ms. Vicky.  Most of the orphans were rescued from the streets where they begged for food, boarded jeepneys to clean shoes of passengers for loose change, and where they often fell prey to individuals who took advantage of their hapless situation.

Tahanan ng Pagmamahal has given these children hope and the chance to a brighter future.  With 4 children enrolled in Grade School this coming June, First Philec/FPMTC has pledged to sponsor the school bags and writing supplies of these children through an ongoing activity dubbed as “Munting Tulong Mo Sa Kinabukasan Ko” where employees are urged to share their coins to fill up a 2-feet tall coin bank.
